Journey details
From Albuquerque to Valles Caldera National Preserve, Hwy 550 to Hwy 4
Bernalillo, N.M.
If you’re starving on the way home, Bosque Brewery in Bernalillo has RV parking in a gravel lot. Brewery is on north side of Hwy. 550 (on left returning to Albuquerque).
Highway 4 from Jemez Springs to Valles Caldera National Preserve
Jemez Springs, N.M.
Mile 29 – Also near Redondo Campground is a boondocking area. Entrance is a dirt logging road turn west (right if coming from Jemez Springs) off Hwy. 4, which runs north-south for a few miles here. Several campfire rings, cut logs all around, but there are a few spots with nice views of San Diego Canyon.
Mile 32 – Jemez Falls Campground requires reservations. This was full when we arrived at 1 p.m. on a rainy Saturday. You can drive in to the short hike to see Jemez Falls. There are signs saying no RVs, but our Ekko did fine, though the end stuck out a little. I would not take a larger RV down there though. Bathrooms located here.
East Fork Trailhead – Nice parking area with picnic tables. Good lunch stop.
Los Conchas Forest Access
Mile 35 – Cross-country ski trail (on the right if you are heading toward Valles Caldera)
Mile 38 – Trail head into Valles Caldera National Monument, $15 per pedestrian.
Mile 39 – Turnoff into Valles Caldera Visitors Center. $25 fee for private vehicles. Various discounts.
